Highway and Structural Design

Caretakers Road over Walloomsac River

Project Highlights

  • Significant Coordination with Historic Preservation Office
  • Steel truss superstructure with timber cover option
  • Located on the lands where the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Bennington took place

Project Description:

This project involved the complete replacement of the existing 110 ft long single lane bridge steel truss with a new 110 ft long timber and steel covered bridge.  The proposed bridge consists of a new prefabricated painted steel truss with a concrete deck. The new single lane structure was designed to be able to accept a timber cover in the future to replicate the original covered bridge that was located at the same crossing in the early 1800’s.  The bridge is located on the lands where the original Battle of Bennington took place.  The substructure consists of pre-cast modular bin-type walls with an architectural laid-up stone finish supported by a concrete filled steel micropile foundation.

The project involved coordination and permitting with the NYS Office of Park Recreation and Historic Preservation and NYS DEC as the project is located within the Bennington Battlefield State Park. This bridge project was certified and funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
