Highway and Structural Design

Padanarum Road Bridge

Project Highlights

  • Coordination with Adirondack Park Agency and State Forest Preserve
  • Minimized wetland and floodplain impacts
  • Very poor soil conditions with steel pipe pile lengths up to 60 ft

Project Description:

This project involved the complete replacement of the existing 31-foot-long single lane bridge with a new 40-foot-long single span three-sided rigid frame precast concrete structure The new single lane structure, with a 30% increase in hydraulic capacity, was placed on a slightly modified alignment to eliminate the existing non-standard horizontal and vertical sight distances. The foundation consisted of a concrete footing on deep steel pipe piles, as the soil conditions, consisting of a 20-foot layer of highly compressible peat.

The project involved coordination and permitting with the Adirondack Park Agency and NYS DEC as the project work limits impacted NYS Forest Preserve, floodplains and wetlands.
